South Sudanese Women’s Leadership in Displacement
Preserving and promoting South Sudanese cultures in the displacement remains a challenge to many struggling to maintain their positive cultural norms, practices, and customs in foreign lands, particularly access to cultural attires, art and music, and food.

The engagement of women as primary custodians of cultures is vital. Ma’ Mara Sakit Village, a feminist community in South Sudan, in collaboration with Community Empowerment for Creative Innovation (CECI), a refugee youth-led organization based in West Nile, Uganda, collaborated on fostering conversations with refugee women leaders on South Sudanese cultural promotion and preservation in displacement.
Therefor, Ma’ Mara Sakit Village and CECI Uganda implemented a joint project in 2024 in Bidibidi Refugee Camp to support South Sudanese women in preserving and promoting their cultural heritage in displacement. The project brought together women leaders and young women through cross-cultural and intergenerational dialogues. Four women were also interviewed for deeper insights. The project concluded with a cultural event attended by over 140 refugees and members of the host communities, strengthening cultural exchange, leadership, and intergenerational learning.
